Malik Brown: Bridging Gaps to Reshape Systems

Malik Brown

As Atlanta’s first Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs—the first role of its kind in the Southeast—and Managing Director of the Atlanta LGBTQ+ Community Center Initiative, Malik Brown is leading without a roadmap. His work bridges government and historically overlooked communities while helping shape major moments like the city’s successful FIFA World Cup 2026 bid. Here, change happens at the intersection of authentic conversations that reshape systems, not just work within them.

How do you build trust across city and community spaces?

I start by holding two truths at once: marginalized communities have real reasons to distrust government, and many leaders are genuinely committed to equity. I don’t ask people to ignore skepticism. I work to meet it with access—connecting communities to resources, decision-makers and policy conversations. At the same time, I push leaders to understand that trust isn’t given, it’s earned, through consistent action.

How can people drive change in slow-moving systems?

There are two kinds of advocates: people who work to change the system from within, and people who want to dismantle it altogether. The most meaningful change I’ve witnessed happens when they connect—the outsider creates urgency, the insider turns it into action. Find your counterpart on the other side and build that relationship.

How can leaders foster belonging on their teams?

Let people show up as their full selves. Teams like X-Men or Avengers, work because every member brings something different to the table. When people feel included, morale and performance improve. Belonging isn’t just a buzzword. Smart leaders recognize that it can be a business strategy.
