Jane Jarrett: Redefining Adventure for All

For Jane Jarrett, the outdoors should be for everyone—regardless of ability. As an adaptive recreation advocate and program manager for Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks, Jarrett has dedicated her career to challenging misconceptions about individuals with disabilities, breaking down barriers and fostering joy, confidence and community in the process. Her work centers on the belief that adventure, independence and meaningful connection aren’t privileges—they’re rights.

What’s a common misconception about individuals with disabilities that you aim to challenge?

Many people believe that individuals with disabilities are limited in their ability to experience adventure, joy and independence. I believe the real limitation isn’t in their abilities—it’s in the way society designs experiences. Through adaptive recreation, I aim to rewrite that narrative by proving that with the right tools, mindset and support, the outdoors and active lifestyles are for everyone.

What lessons have you learned from the people you serve?

True strength isn’t just about physical or mental ability—it’s about adaptability, creativity and perseverance. Obstacles aren’t roadblocks but rather invitations to innovate. I’ve seen people find joy in the smallest victories, and that has taught me to appreciate progress over perfection. Watching someone conquer their first adaptive kayaking or navigate attending an event that once seemed impossible fuels my passion. It’s not about what we think is possible; it’s about discovering new possibilities together.

How do you design programs that go beyond accessibility to foster joy, confidence and connection?

Accessibility is just the starting point. The real magic happens when we create environments that encourage people to push past self-imposed limits, celebrate each other’s achievements, feel safe and form deep, meaningful connections. I focus on experiences that empower rather than just accommodate—because confidence comes from conquering challenges, not avoiding them.

What’s next for you—are there any upcoming projects or initiatives you’re excited about?

Absolutely! We’re expanding our adaptive recreation programs with some exciting new events: Adaptive Kayaking and Fishing launching this summer, the Super Star Dance for teens and adults with disabilities and the Blue Stone 5K-9 Road Race featuring an adaptive athlete division. Each program is another step toward making the outdoors and community events more inclusive, empowering and full of joy.
