What is Vascular Dementia?

Increasingly, more people are becoming aware that the most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s. Lesser known, but just as important to understand is the SECOND most common cause of dementia: Vascular Dementia.

Vascular Dementia, sometimes referred to as multi-infarct dementia, is characterized by progressive worsening of cognitive skills, language abilities and memory loss in the setting of multiple strokes. Generally, this is a step-wise process as each successive stroke causes another level of loss of brain function. However, it can also be a slow and steady decline in situations where chronic injuries are occurring especially in cases of long-standing uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Even patients with the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s are at risk for Vascular Dementia. In addition to treating Alzheimer’s with medications, doctors recommend attending to healthy diet, regular exercise, as well as screening and treatment for atherosclerosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and cerebral amyloid angiopathy to prevent strokes.

It is important to note that with proper attention to your vascular risk factors, you can potentially stop the progression of Vascular Dementia. At Midtown Neurology, P.C., we are here to help. Early evaluation, diagnosis and treatment are essential to your well-being and brain health!
