Run your best race ever with these tips from fitness expert Madison James for training for the 2017 Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure on June 24.

1. We all know exercise is important. What inspires you to encourage others to live a healthy lifestyle?

You just feel better overall. The stress of everyday life takes a toll on the body. But, when you add a healthy lifestyle it will aid in your body releasing stress. Plus, exercise and a healthy lifestyle will help control your weight, improve your mood and fight diseases, such as breast cancer. In fact, women who are overweight after menopause have a 30-60 percent higher breast cancer risk.

 2. What advice can you offer someone new to exercise?

First, don’t put so much pressure on yourself. When you make something a lifestyle, you have to approach it one day at a time. If you are new to exercise, start out walking 20 minutes three days a week, add five minutes each week. Make it a group activity. Exercising is more fun with friends. Plus, you will keep each other accountable. Signing up for the Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure on June 24 is a great place to start.

 3. Do I need special equipment or gear for exercising?

No, oddly this keeps a lot of people from taking that first step. You can walk around your neighborhood. You would be amazed what your own body weight can do. If you are new to working out: try push-ups, sit-ups, walking lunges and jumping jacks. These are great exercises that don’t require any special equipment. Parks are also a great space to workout. I love to work out on the Atlanta BeltLine. You also want to make sure you get fitted for the proper shoe. This is often a mistake that people starting out make. Several local Atlanta fitness stores offer a free fitting service so you can find your perfect fit.

4. Can you describe a week-long workout plan?

A week-long workout plan involves lots of mixing it up! I work out no longer than 30 minutes, five days a week. I like to keep it fresh with biking, weights, high-intensity training, plyometrics, jumping rope and body weight exercises. This keeps my body guessing and I never get bored.

5. What tips can you share when training gets difficult and one becomes easily discouraged?

When training gets difficult remind yourself why you are doing it. Remember every day is a journey.  Don’t put so much pressure on yourself! Have fun and take it one day at a time!

 6. Can you walk us through what the night before Komen Atlanta’s Race for the Cure and the morning of look like?

You want to make sure you are taking in fluids. Hydration is key! The night before, make sure you get a good night sleep.  Another great tip is to lay out everything you need for the race the night before. This will eliminate some stress the morning of the race. Make sure you eat a good meal and one you have eaten before the night prior to race. You don’t want to get sick the night before the race. This is where routine is key! The morning of enjoy a light breakfast, hydrate again and head off to the race!
