Rachel Wasserman 2021 Over 40

Giving back is a full-time job for Rachel Wasserman. The 40-year-old single mom of four has worked her entire life with organizations that help with homelessness, child care and more. Now the executive director of the Jewish Women’s Fund of Atlanta, she works to make the world a more equitable place for Jewish women, while still making time to help her kids with homework and take care of herself.

What inspires you to get up every morning?

I was raised with the value that everyone deserves equal opportunities, regardless of their background. Fighting for gender equity is especially meaningful for me as a woman and as a mother of a daughter. The thought that my daughter would have fewer opportunities than her twin brother lights my fire to wake up every day and fight for gender justice.

What impact do you hope to leave on the world?

My passion in life is fighting for gender equality and social justice. My goal is not only to directly change lives through my professional and personal advocacy but also to inspire others and instill these same values in my four children.

What advice would you give to people in their 20s and 30s?

Figure out ways to make the world a better place. Everyone has a responsibility to think beyond themselves and take care of those around us. Communities are at their best when people make decisions based on what’s good for the whole, not just what’s good for them.

How do you maintain the balance between self-care, family, and work responsibilities, and giving back?

I don’t think I balance, but rather I constantly juggle. There are a million tabs open in my brain at all times, and I’m always taking an accounting of what needs to get done and when. I’m fortunate enough to have a career that is also a passion and gives back to the world, but I take my time off very seriously and am always sure to make time for relaxation and family.

What is your favorite way to work out and why?

Any workout with Desiree Nathanson, owner of Interfusion Fitness, is my favorite because her positivity and authenticity have helped me enjoy exercise for the first time in my life. She reminds me to breathe through many of life’s challenges and is one of the biggest support systems I’ve ever had.
