Matthew Bowling: Breaking the Hospitality Mold

Matthew Bowling

As President of Lanier Islands Resort, Matthew Bowling is transforming the lakeside destination into one of the South’s most sought-after escapes. With a vision for a bigger future, he has spearheaded sweeping change, including the room refresh of Legacy Lodge and the debut of Georgia’s only night-lit, 6-hole lakeside par-3 course. From envisioning immersive one-of-a-kind experiences to bringing them to life, Bowling has a knack for creating moments that feel personal and memorable.

What habits or standards have driven your success?

First, master the basics: be on time, communicate clearly, follow through, and treat everyone with respect. Second, start your day early. That extra time allows you to get ahead, whether it’s reading news articles and books for your respective field, writing handwritten notes, or tackling work that always ends up at the end of the to-do list.

What new or refreshed experience at Lanier Islands Resort are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of bringing back our Magical Nights of Lights holiday driving light show. It was once one of the best light shows in the world. We brought it back in 2025 with a $1 million investment and nearly 1 million lights, creating a one-of-a-kind island experience in the Southeast that attracted over 100,000 guests.

What’s one small detail that makes a big impact?

A handwritten note from my family in every guest room. It reinforces that we are a family-owned resort and shows a level of care that guests truly appreciate.
