Heather Lu May has spent over two decades helping women feel more comfortable in their skin. Having struggled with cystic acne and endured childhood trauma, the holistic esthetician understands how deeply confidence can be shaken. Today, the spa founder and single mom shares her perspective through courses, retreats and her book, Sacred Skin: Healing From Within, exploring the connections between emotional well-being and skin health while encouraging women to embrace their natural beauty and recognize their own worth.
What inspired you to write your book?
About three years ago, I closed my business to open a retreat center with my husband. We had all these amazing plans. Then I discovered he was having an affair with one of my friends. Suddenly, it wasn’t just my marriage changing. It was everything. That’s when I decided to tell my story. A dear friend of mine who had cancer always said, ‘Thoughts are things,’ and those words stayed with me. I believe we have to talk about what we’ve been through to heal. Writing this book was a big part of that for me, and I hope it helps others find their way forward.
Tell us about a cause close to your heart.
My daughter was born with nystagmus and sensory issues. When she was little, we tried to find ways for her to be herself while navigating those challenges. Now she’s 18 and an amazing actress and singer. Through my work with KultureCity, we help create safe spaces in public places for people with sensory needs. Being her mom means so much to me. I feel like I’ve broken the cycle of trauma I grew up with, and she’s teaching me so much.
How has your relationship with beauty changed?
I’ve learned to love the aging process. I worked in the plastic surgery world, and I have nothing against people choosing those treatments, but over the years I’ve really embraced more holistic approaches. I’m learning to love my fine lines and wrinkles rather than trying to erase them.
