Charbel Aoun: Building a Legacy of First-Generation Success

For Charbel Aoun, success isn’t measured by grades or test scores—it’s rooted in belief. As a first-generation college graduate, current pharmacy student and founder of the Georgia First Generation Foundation, Aoun has dedicated his life to transforming the journey of other first-generation students. His mission? To create spaces where students feel seen, supported and inspired to dream bigger. Through mentorship, scholarship programs and community-building, Aoun is shifting the narrative from isolation to empowerment, helping over 1,000 students students realize they’re not alone on their path.

What inspires you?

Helping students realize that being the first doesn’t mean being alone. There’s incredible power in community—when students see they’re part of a broader family of trailblazers, it transforms their entire perspective on what’s possible. I’m inspired every time I see a student go from feeling isolated to becoming a mentor themselves. That ripple effect—where today’s first-generation students become tomorrow’s leaders and mentors—drives me to continue building and strengthening our community.

What’s the biggest misconception about first-generation students?

There’s a misconception that first-generation students are somehow less prepared or more likely to fail. But I’ve learned that failure doesn’t define you—it helps shape you. Every setback is an opportunity to learn, adapt and grow stronger. First-generation students often have an innate ability to innovate and problem-solve because they approach challenges with fresh perspectives. We’re actively working to shift this narrative by showcasing how being first-generation is a unique advantage. These students bring resilience, adaptability and determination into every space they enter, enriching classrooms and communities.

How are you redefining mentorship for first-generation students?

We’re moving away from the traditional one-size-fits-all mentorship model. Instead, we focus on creating authentic connections—pairing students with mentors who truly understand their journeys. Our programs go beyond academic advice. We’re here to validate dreams, offer emotional support and provide the tools students need to succeed. Through initiatives like our FirstGen Summit, Banquet and Gala, we celebrate achievements, foster community, and recognize the trailblazers who are changing the game.

What insights can you give to fellow innovators as they’re starting out?

Start with your ‘why’ and let it guide every decision. Your purpose must be bigger than yourself but personal enough to sustain you through challenges. Don’t be afraid to start small – meaningful change often begins with helping just one person and growing organically. Listen deeply to the community you’re serving. Innovation isn’t always about creating something new – sometimes, it’s about finding better ways to address existing needs.
