Inspiring Students to Reach New Heights
As a teacher at The Ron Clark Academy, Michael Bonner has transformed the traditional classroom experience, utilizing creative strategies to engage and inspire his students. What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
As a college athlete, we would go and do read-alouds at local elementary schools. When we walked in, the students looked at us like angelic beings because of our height. The twinkle in their eyes connected with me, and I immediately went to Dr. Poulson to change my major from psychology to elementary education at Elizabeth City State University.
How do you keep your students engaged and motivated in the classroom?
I make sure to keep them engaged by presenting them with contemporary topics and skills that will benefit them 5-10 years from now. Unfortunately, some school districts are teaching concepts and ideologies that are culturally irrelevant to them. I chose to go the other route and inform them about historical concepts, entrepreneurship and investing.
What advice would you give to other teachers who want to make a difference in their students’ lives?
Think about the generational impact one unfortunate educational experience can create. We have the ability to truly empower our students and create the leaders of tomorrow. We can’t take it lightly.
What do you see as the future of education?
Artificial intelligence is progressing quicker than we anticipated. It is moving faster than the evolution of the internet. I believe if educators can adapt quickly, they will be able to give students a better experience. Next year, I plan on integrating artificial intelligence in an innovative way at The Ron Clark Academy.
