Men’s Health Summer Edition: Hot Tips to Keep Your Cool
By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
Summer brings a sense of freedom and vitality, encouraging us to step outside and bask in the longer days and warmer nights. It’s time to flip the switch from hibernation to rejuvenation, charging through summer with vigor. To help you get the most out of your longer summer days and warm nights, consider these men’s health tips for summer.
- Prioritize Hydration. Hydration is paramount. That’s no surprise coming from a urologist. Start your day with a large glass of water. Consider your body like a well-oiled machine in the summer heat; water is your oil, keeping everything running smoothly.
- Keep it Moving. Regular exercise is another pillar of a healthy summer regimen. Activities like swimming, biking, and hiking offer cardiovascular benefits, help maintain a healthy weight and boost your mood. Try to avoid the sun’s peak hours, opting for morning or late afternoon workouts for cooler temperatures and reduced UV exposure. Always use sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, reapplying as necessary, especially after swimming or sweating.
- Indulge in Moderation. Alcohol consumption tends to increase during the summer months, with backyard barbecues and beach parties in full swing. While social drinking is a part of summer festivities, moderation is key. Excessive alcohol can lead to dehydration, among other health issues. Be sure to drink water between alcoholic drinks.
- Stay on Schedule. The summer’s extended daylight hours can disrupt sleep patterns, affecting overall health and well-being. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is essential, even when tempted to stay up later. Quality sleep supports immune function, mood regulation and cognitive performance. Blackout curtains or a sleep mask can help provide a darker environment at bedtime.
- Pencil In Your Annual. Of course, an annual health check-up should be on every man’s summer to-do list. This visit is an opportunity to review your overall health, update vaccinations and discuss any concerns. Early detection and prevention are key strategies in managing health risks.
While the summer offers ample opportunities for fun and relaxation, it also requires a mindful approach to health. By following these simple tips, men can enjoy all that summer has to offer while taking care of their health. Summer, after all, isn’t just a time to unwind but a season to wind up the best version of yourself. Look for my article on “Men’s Health: Thinking Inside the Box” in the next issue.
