How Men Can Boost Their Family’s Health During the Holidays
By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
With the holiday season kicking off at Thanksgiving and spilling over into January, many men shift into logistical overdrive—blending football games with holiday festivities, juggling family and office social celebrations and making sure gift-giving tasks are covered. Amidst the chaos of the season, it’s also a powerful time for men to reset and refocus, not only on their health but their family’s health as well.
Here’s how fathers—and all men—can lead by example and make a lasting impact on the well-being of those they love most.
Get Those Appointments Scheduled
Kids completed their back-to-school physicals a few months ago. When’s the last time you saw your doctor? Kids notice when dad prioritizes preventive care. Whether it’s a wellness check, cholesterol screening or a prostate exam, booking your own appointment reinforces that good health is a family value.
Fuel Better Habits at Home
Kids often mimic what they see—not what they’re told.If you’re skipping vegetables, glued to your screen or always too tired to move, your family will notice. Try this instead: prep a healthy dinner together, go for a family walk after dinner or make hydration a group goal. Small changes can spark long-term wellness.
Talk About Mental Health
The holidays are a time we celebrate with family and friends, but they can also be stressful for everyone in the family. Make it normal to checkin on emotions. And don’t be afraid to share your own struggles. Emotional strength isn’t about hiding feelings—it’s about handling them constructively.
Stay in the Game
Fall sports are a great way to reconnect with your family’s physical activity. Toss a football in the yard. Take on the neighborhood pickleball court. When kids see their father staying active, they’re more likely to do the same and build a lifelong habit.
The holidays aren’t just about celebrating, socializing and giving thanks. As 2025 comes to an end, we’re also thinking about the new year and a symbolic fresh start.Use it. Healthier routines now can mean fewer sick days, stronger focus and better energy for the whole family. Ready to hit reset?
