Jessica Johnson
Jessica Johnson’s nursing career began in behavioral health, but her commitment to helping others now reaches far beyond the bedside. As a community relations leader at Kaiser Permanente, she pairs nonprofit investment with a passion for developing people, from mentoring newly licensed nurses to supporting emerging civic leaders through Leadership Henry. The proud dance mom brings that same encouragement home to her 10-year-old daughter, showing her how to lead with compassion and live with intention.
What inspired your career in mental health?
I was 14 when my cousin died by suicide. Without any brothers or sisters, she was like a sibling to me. That loss shaped my career path. I couldn’t get her back, but I thought if I could save just one life, it would make it all worth it. I went on to work in behavioral health as a nurse and administrator. Today, I also volunteer with Silence the Shame, supporting suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
How are you helping families build healthier futures?
By investing in nonprofits that address barriers to health like food insecurity, education and housing. When we help lift those burdens, people have more room to build themselves up and develop job skills. Luckily, I get to work in the community as part of my job. That’s where I’m putting my time and energy, helping organizations give families the support they need to move forward.
What have you learned about embracing a new chapter?
I had my daughter at 35. Before that, I traveled and lived in four major U.S. cities. I wanted to experience life, and now I’m a dance mom, which I never would have imagined! In my 40s, I’m moving with more wisdom and intention. My daughter sees what I’m doing, and I’m creating a legacy she can look up to and be proud of. You might have had some wonderful years already, but there’s so much life still to live.
